Have you ever been asked who your favorite person is from the Holy Bible? If you have a favorite, who is it? What makes that person your fave? I love to consider Daud (David) when I ponder these things, because that man taught me so much. You do know that the Word calls Daud a “man after my (Yahuah’s) own heart”, right? Yes, Yahuah refers to Daud as a man after His own heart.
That is beautiful, because Daud was a nuclear catastrophe of a man.
You knew that already, right? Right? 🙂
After Yahuah allows Daud to kill the giant, leading to the immediate conquest of the Philistine army and the great victory for Israel, and after elevating Daud to King and making Daud the best king in the history of Israel, Daud did some bad things. Really bad. Stoning offense bad. Daud should have been stoned to death for two distinct violations of the commands of Yahuah.
He summoned the wife of his friend and next-door-neighbor, Uriah, to his bedroom and planted his seed in her. That’s adultery and worthy of death for both Daud and Bathsheba (Uriah’s wife).
Then, when that seed grew sufficiently to prove Bathsheba was pregnant, Daud tried to deceive Uriah into thinking the baby was his own. He did this by summoning Uriah back to Israel from some war (I forget with which kingdom) on official business. Daud thought Uriah would sleep in his own home and have sex with Bathsheba, but no.
Uriah was a wholly dedicated servant of Daud, and chose instead to sleep on the ground at the gate of the palace in honor of the men still fighting the war far away. He would not go home and would not know his wife until his men also returned to Jerusalem. Uriah was one of Daud’s “mighty men”. Literally. A premier example of good character and fighting ability.
Daud then decided that Uriah had to die, and wrote a letter to the commanding general of the war requesting that Uriah be ordered to lead a charge against the gates of the enemy city. Uriah knew he would die the moment he learned of his task. Daud and the general both know that Uriah would die in that attack.
Daud murdered Uriah by sending Uriah to certain death.
The murder was, in my opinion, an act of mercy to Uriah, who certainly would have chosen death rather than to know that his best friend had seduced his own wife and impregnated her while Uriah was away fighting his best friends wars. Plus, the other leaders would perhaps lead a revolution against Daud if they found out that Daud was sleeping with Bathsheba. What other wives, they would wonder, has Daud summoned to his bed in their absence?
What kind of scum does what Daud did? The worst kind.
A man after Yahuah’s heart.
Yahusha will rule from the throne of Daud.
So what do we learn from this?
Very much, indeed.
First, Yahuah is merciful and forgiving to all who seek His mercy and forgiveness. Daud truly loved Yahuah, and studied Torah continually.
Second, Daud was a man and mankind disobeys Yahuah. We sin. Our closeness to Yahuah does not make us sinless. Only perfect obedience to the commands of Yahuah can make us blameless, and who has done that? Still, Daud’s sins were great. He was worthy of death, for sure, but the Words reminds us that Daud was a man after the heart of Yahuah.
Daud loved Yahuah, and Yahuah loves Daud. Daud is in heaven and if I were to guess, I would guess that Bathsheba is, too. How could she not worship Yahuah, living with Daud? He worshiped Yahuah and studied Torah continually.
You see, study and adherence to Torah is key to a right relationship with Yahuah. Yes, Yahusha (aka Jesus) said that loving Yahuah and loving our neighbor as we loved ourselves summed up the Law and the Prophets, but Yahusha also said that Yahuah was greater then himself. Therefore, the commands of Yahuah are greater than the commands of Yahusha. That is necessarily so.
And Yahusha only came to do the Will of His Heavenly Father. Why? Because Yahuah is the Aleph and the Tov. He is I Am. He IS. Yahusha is His son and servant. Yahusha is perfect in His worship of His Father.
We are called to know Torah, and to abide throughout our lives in harmony with the commands of Yahuah. These commands are throughout the Book and they are easy to understand. The Holy Spirit of Yahuah will teach each of us according to our current level of understanding, and He will increase our understanding as we endeavor to submit more fully to Truth.
Yahuah knows precisely where each of us stands in relationship to Him. He will perfectly judge each of us and reward all who follow Him according to what we have done that was in obedience to His Words. Those crowns in heaven? Think light, as in plasma. No weight, just glory 🙂
Most importantly, we want to release our personal pride and egos and offer our heart to Him. We want to simply let go of this wicked natural life and live in the grace of His Will. We are aliens here. We do not belong here and we will never be comfortable here. We hate the world and the world hates us.
But no matter. Who cares? The important thing is this: That you continue to study Him and to embrace Him as your Father. We will experience trials. We will sometimes suffer very much. People will laugh at us, scoff at us; mock us; lie about us; lie to us; rob us; isolate us; tempt us; spit on us and every wicked thing they can come up with. Yet still we stand.
When we leave this earth, we will have finished the race. We will have stood and remained standing. We will have kept the faith, faith being obedience to His commands. When we pass from this existence to life, we will immediately wish we had done more in His name. We will keenly desire to have been better children. That will be important to us on His side of the curtain.
But just Like Daud, who failed so badly, Father will love you and welcome you home. You will arrive there fully forgiven of everything, with no sin remembered by Yahuah.
How important was Torah to Daud?
